2020 Spring Break Travel Soars Stateside and Beyond

Allianz Reveals Top 2020 Spring Break Destinations, Florida and Caribbean Make the Grade While International and Domestic Travel Rise Overall

Richmond, VA, February 24, 2020 – The number of Americans packing their bags for stateside Spring Break trips increased 24% over the past year, with an 18% increase in international getaways, according to Allianz Global Assistance’s Top 10 Spring Break Destinations survey.

The travel insurance and assistance company analyzed more than 2.7 million flight itineraries* for trips between five and eight days in length and found that for the fourth year in a row, Orlando and Cancun are the most popular destinations among Americans, proving Spring Break travelers don’t tire of escaping the winter cold to soak up the sun in a warm-weathered getaway.

International travel is on the rise and Americans are showing no signs of slowing down: Mexico will see an influx of American visitors as the Spring Break hot spot dominates with Cancun, Mexico (13.4%, no change from last year), San Jose Del Cabo, Mexico (9.1%, no change from last year), and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (6.3%, up a spot from last year) leading the list. Other Top 10 International Destinations include Nassau, Bahamas (5.8%, down a spot from last year), Montego Bay, Jamaica (5.1%, up three spots from last year), Aruba, Aruba (4.8%, no change from last year), Providenciales, Turks and Caicos (3.9%, up a spot from last year), London, United Kingdom (3.8%, reappearing on the Top 10 list for first time since 2018), Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (3.3%, up a spot from last year) and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (2.6%, down three spots from last year).

London is the only non-Caribbean destination in the Top 10 International Destinations list, which saw some movement in rankings from last year: the Bahamas, still recovering from Hurricane Dorian, slips a spot; Jamaica, which will enjoy silver screen airtime as a backdrop in April’s “No Time to Die” James Bond 007 blockbuster, rose three spots; and the Dominican Republic, which showed resilience in last year’s Thanksgiving travel survey despite suspicion stemming from a spate of vacationer deaths, dropped three spots for Spring Break.

Families looking to make dreams come true at the ‘theme park capital of the world’ are likely contributing to the number of travelers jetting off to Orlando (7.8%, no change from last year), perhaps thanks in part to new immersive experiences like Walt Disney World® Resort’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opening. Following in popularity for domestic Spring Break travel are: Phoenix (5.3%, no change from last year), Las Vegas (4.3%, no change from last year), Los Angeles (3.9%, up one spot from last year), New York (3.7%, down one spot from last year), Fort Lauderdale (3.7%, no change from last year), Fort Myers (3.6%, no change from last year), Miami (3.1%, no change from last year), Salt Lake City (2.8%, no change from last year) and Tampa (2.7%, no change from last year).

“It’s heartening to see that Americans are bullish on Spring Break despite recent headlines and that both domestic and international destinations will see an increased influx of visitors,” said Daniel Durazo, director of marketing and communications for Allianz Global Assistance USA. “Whether you’re planning to be the life of the party or in full relaxation mode, the last thing you want is a dream vacation ruined by an unexpected event. Buying trip protection when you book your travel can put your mind at ease — make sure you add it to your pre-trip checklist, along with sunscreen.”
